The Official Website for the Self, Selfe, Selph families of the World
The 4th Annual Gathering of Self Family Researchers was held on the 28th of April 2001 in the Dahlgren / Colonial Beach area of Virginia. This was truly an event to remember. This years planning committee included: Jami Hamilton, Bryce Self, Barbara Self, Fay Oliff, Wayne Self, Darlene Tallent, and Dan McCarthy.
THE GATHERING
On the 27th of April, 2001, early attendees began Gathering friday afternoon in the lobby and conference room of the Holiday Inn in Dahlgren, Va. to begin meeting one another for the very first time. (One must realize that virtually every attendee shows up not knowing one other person who will be there) By evening this crowd had grown to about 30, and an impromptu supper at Avanti's restaurant followed from about 6:00 until 9:00 PM.
On Saturday morning, April 28th, some went to view the property / patent of Robert Self, of whom we all hope to prove to someday, and "view" we did as we were denied permission at the very last due to crop plantings and the volume of people, but none-the-less, it was possible to drive across or up to all the various Self family properties as presented on the cover of Volume 1 Issue 2 of the Self Family Newsletter.
This was followed by a special opening (Thanks to Darlene Tallent of the Northern Neck Historical Society) of the Yeocomico Church, first built in 1655, and rebuilt in 1706, and next to Robert Selfs patent, especially for our group. Mr. John Morrow guided us giving the history and details of the construction of the Church and area. Mr. Morrow and the Church building impressed us all.
Afterwards the group scattered to various sites, cemeteries, points of interest, etc. of the area, with one group of nearly 20 bee-lining to the Northern Neck Museum and Library in downtown Montross. This too is a must see.
At a wee bit past noon, the family found it's way to Wilkersons Restaurant on the Potomac for our family meal. After arrival and meeting additional researching members of the family, our Bryce Self gave a great introduction and blessing. During and near the end of our meal we drew for a few door prizes contributed by various sources:

A special Attendance Award went to Doris Howard who has attended all the Self Family Gatherings.
And our Senior Researchers Award went to Wahnetah Selph who has persevered the Self family the longest.

Westmoreland Reunion Feedback
Dan,
This was by far, the best and most liked family reunion I have ever
attended. Mainly because of the efforts that you put into these events, I am sure. You are so right, although we did not know each other, we all looked forward to meeting each other and sharing our information. I for one, had the best time I have ever had at an event like this. The rest of my branches must learn how to do this to maximize the sharing and enjoyment of all. Thanks you for your efforts and attention to so many details. It was wonderful. Pat Holland
