The 5th Annual Gathering of Self family researchers was held on the 27th of April, 2002 in Gadsden, Alabama. The 2002 Gathering was held in conjunction with the North East Alabama Genealogical Society's "Ancestor Swap Meet". Our group added in along with their outstanding program drew a crowd of over 160 people. This was a fun-filled event with researchers from all over the USA and tons of information for those with an Southern connection.
The NEAGS ancestor swap meet started about 8:30 Saturday morning with loads of activities for the genealogists. There was a guest speaker, Dr. Robert S. Davis. Dr. Davis is a renowned genealogist, professor, and author. He has numerous books on research and genealogy and research in Georgia. He is a professor at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, AL., and his genealogy library is second to none in Alabama.
We then had a very good catered in lunch at 11:30 - 12:30, and at 1:00 PM, we, the Self family, excused ourselves, and adjourned to the Self Family room for our personal research efforts.
This year we announced the presentation of the first Thelma Nolen Cornfeld Scholarship Award to one of our Self descendants currently enrolled in college. Our Self Family Scholarship for the year 2002 went to Jennifer Day of Newburgh, Indiana, a great great great granddaughter of John Bell Self of Grayson County, Kentucky. A check for $250.00 was promptly mailed.
Our Award for the "Senior Attendee" went to Thomas C. Self
The "Senior Researcher" award went to Walter Jones who has been with the Self Family Newsletter group since 1982.
Mr. Bryce Self of California, not only garnered the "Hopaki Nowa" award for coming the longest distance to be with us, but also honored our group by giving the blessing for the North East Alabama Genealogical Society / Self Family lunch.
The perfect "Attendance Award" went to Doris Howard
and this year we gave a special "Appreciation Award" to our own RoseMary Hyatt who made it all possible for us to share this day with NEAGS's ancestor meet, aka "RoseMary's Baby"
Not an Award and not a prize, but it should be noted that Pam Self Reynolds gave to each DeWitt Self and Dan McCarthy, her "buddies" a gold framed 12" W X 15" H Self Family Coat-of-Arms.
Door prizes this year included:

A Genealogy frenzy followed.
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Twenty-one members of the family got together at the "Top O' the River" seafood restaurant in Gadsden for a big meal and personal bonding.
9:15 - 10:00 PM or there about, in the meeting room of the Holiday Inn Express motel, members of the family met and discussed the locations for the future Self-2003 and Self-2004 events.
28th of April, 2002, Morning. Remnants of the group drifted in and out of the lobby as late as noon as flights out, and travel times home varied. As promised, we have just met some of the greatest people on earth, and had an adventure we'll never forget.
