The 6th Annual National Gathering of Self - Selph family researchers, SELF-2003, was held on April 26th, 2003, in Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina. This record setting Gathering was open to all Self - Selph family descendants who were interested in preserving, sharing and learning more of their Self heritage. The planning and assisting committee this year was: Barbara Freemal, Jerry Self, Daniel McCarthy, Doris Howard, Mae Cabaniss, and Diane Taylor.
On Friday evening of the 25th of April, 2003, the early birds in the area got together at Jackson's Cafeteria for supper, with chat sessions earlier in the day and after supper.

THE GATHERING
9:00 AM - Barbara Freemal, the North Carolina Editor for the Self Family Newsletter, lead many of the group to the ruins of William Self, an early Self family settler in Cleveland County. This old building was well worth the trip. Wait til you see the pictures. On this Saturday morning after the visit to the ruins of the old Self Family of Cleveland County homestead, we also visited two cemeteries to take photos of Self family gravestones.
9:30 AM Our banquet / meeting room at the Days Inn West was opened for those who were unable to attend the tour of ruins and cemeteries.
11:15 AM - Brent H. Holcomb, a well known genealogist and author of dozens of genealogical research books (and one time researcher of the Self family) gave an impressive presentation to the group. Any researcher, regardless of their years of experience working genealogy in North or South Carolina, benefited from this program.
12:30 PM - 5:30 PM The family meal was held at Ken and Mary's Restaurant at the Days Inn West. Ken Donaldson manager, prepared us a delicious buffet style meal. Immediately following the meal we had our annual presentation of Awards and the giving of door prizes.
This years Self Family Newsletter / Thelma Cornfeld Scholarship was awarded to Meredith Bailey, Apex, NC., a student at North Carolina State University at Raleigh, North Carolina, and was presented, in her absence, to Mack Self, her grandfather. Meredith Bailey is the great great great grand-daughter of William Self, 1809-1878, of Cleveland County, NC.
The Self Family Newsletter, in the name of Thelma Cornfeld, a former Editor with the Newsletter in the 1980's, awards annually a $250.00 scholarship to a Self / Selph descendant in college, taking courses in Genealogy or American History.
4:30 PM - Group photo sessions. Throughout the day, Doris Howard, the Mississippi Editor of the Self Family Newsletter, took pictures for future use on the Self-2003 page, as well as a group shot this afternoon by her and others.
5:00 PM, Immediately following the photo shoot. A Genealogy workshop was presented by Jane Self, on the Flip Album program for your computer. This knowledgeable school teacher kept the class in order and informed them well.
7:00 PM - We got together at Don's Italian Restaurant for supper.
8:45 PM - Joining us at our banquet/ meeting room and providing some great humor to cap off the day was Kathryn Hamrick, a well known and respected columnist / humorist for the Shelby Star, and niece of Coleman Self. We were very well entertained. Mrs Hamrick is a must hear for anyone who has the opportunity.

The Senior Researcher Award goes to the "senior" researcher present. The Genesis Award goes to those in attendance who were part of the beginning group in 1980. the Senior Couple Award to the oldest SELF / SELPH couple in attendance. This years Senior Couple Award went to Oran and Lorene Self of Texas, who in the final days prior to Self-2003, were unable to attend due to health reasons.
A record 84 individuals confirmed & 14 confirmed states - ID., CA., TX., KS., MO., NY., MS., FL., AL., VA., TN., GA., SC., & NC. For those who missed this, just imagine, 84 researchers talking Self - Selph - Self - Selph, continually from Friday evening to Sunday morning. A lot of data was exchanged, many cousins met, and so, so many memories.
