# 141221 I have been searching for several years for the family of my maternal grandfather, William J. Self (William's middle name may be Jackson or Jefferson). William was most likely born in the late 1800s or the early 1900s and probably lived in Jefferson &/or Blount County Alabama from the time of his birth until at least the 1930s. William married Thelma G. Edwards sometime after 1915 in either Jefferson or Blount Co. and by the early 1920s William, Thelma and their 3 children were living in Jefferson County where they appear in the City Directories. The only other information that I have is that William's family had been in Blount &/or Jefferson County Alabama for several generations, and during the 1920s William was employed by the railroad. However, between 1925 to 1930 William and Thelma ended their marriage and Thelma moved her family to California, at which time, all contact with William and the Self family was lost. The names of William and Thelma's children are: William, Thomas and Mary Elizabeth. Mary Elizabeth was born on April 5, 1921 in Birmingham Ala.

Would love to hear from anyone related to any of these lines and hopefully find the parents and siblings of James Self in Virginia. See also my website for information and family pictures.
# 141241 Born in Georgia, reared in the home of a Mr. Self, William Burt was born 30 January 1797 and died 19 May, 1900, at the age of 103 years, three months, and 19 days. One day, when he was sent to the Mill with a turn of corn, he met a man there who engaged him in conversation, and the man asked if he knew what his name was, and he replied - "William Self". The man told him "your real name is Burt", and that he was not a Self. This man told him he had a sister in Mississippi. So when William went back home from the Mill, he packed his best clothing, and left home, never to return to the Self home, or to Georgia.
William Burt was my great great grandfather and this story is all the information I have been able to collect on him. How much of it is accurate, I don't know, but I do know that he left a legacy which I am grateful for.

(Eldest daughter Ellen was not living at home at time of census.
I descend from the son John Self. He married Mary J. Westin 6 August 1854 in Madison Co. OH. Their children were: James, b. 1855 d. in infancy; Mariah Jane, b. 1856; and Irving Eugene, born 20 May 1858. Mary J. (Westin) Self died in September 1858 shortly after the birth of Irving. John married Jemima Nash 25 May 1859 and they had the following children: twins May (girl) and Marion (boy), born 1860; John, born 1863; Lydia, born 1864; and Diana, born 1867.

# 141242 Looking for information on Capt. W. A. Selph. He was in the 38th Mississippi Infantry, army of the Confederate States of America. Capt. Selph died in action on May 31, 1863 at the battle of Vicksburg, MS., and is buried in the paupers' cemetery there. Any information about him or his family would be appreciated. Apparently many records were destroyed and I have been unable to locate details. Anyone have info?

Ties to Francis Self of AL also. She and William went to AL to help "settle his estate" according to family legend. Daniels used Francis as given name for several generations.
