Self (one Census Record says he was born in Ohio; another says he was born in North Carolina.) Spouse: Sarah J. Crowder (believe her father may be John Crowder). Self, born 1879. Sarah E. married McManniel ("Mack") O. Clark of Sandy Mush area, Buncombe County, North Carolina, and she lived there until her death on 25 October 1902. She is buried in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. #143782 My mother was Hattie P. Self, born July 14, 1890 in Hornbeck, Vernon Parish, LA., descendant of David W. Self. D.W. Self was born December 21, 1833 in Pike County, MS., died 6 August 1896 Sabine Parish, LA. his burial was at the Self family cemetery in Sabine Parish. He was married to Elizabeth Letitia (Betty) Sibley. David W. Self was a Captain, later Major, in Company B, 17th Regiment of Louisiana Infantry (Sabine Rebels) Confederate States having joined September 30, 1861. He was wounded and captured near Vicksburg, MS. July 04, 1862 and was released to go home and recover. He later returned to the war. He was the first school Superintendent of Sabine Parish; Tax Assessor from 1860-1877, less Civil War time; Sheriff of Sabine Parish from 1884 -1888; member of Louisiana Legislature from 1888 - 1892.
Not Really True - In 1750 or so, Zeb Self was leading a group of settlers in a wagon train out of a settlement near the Northern Neck area of Virginia into west central (then the wild west) Virginia, when his new Indian scout came running to him all excited, and in broken English told him not to take the usual left fork in the road because "there's a bacon tree ahead". After contemplating what he had just heard, ole Zeb Self lead the wagon train onto the left fork of the road per plan. Within a few miles the wagon train was attacked and everyone except Mr. Self was killed. Two days later Zeb straggled into the near settlement where he encountered his scout and he immediately asked why he wasn't warned of the Indian trap on the road. The scout, puzzled and taken aback, explained that since his English wasn't that great, that instead of stating "there's a bacon tree ahead", maybe he could've said "there's a ham bush ahead".
#143791 I am still searching for the parents and siblings of Elizabeth C. Self, born about 1813, supposedly Georgia. She married Presley Bradley July 25, 1830 in Morgan county Georgia. Her sister Harriet married Nipper Adams, also in Morgan County in 1830. Both families moved to Alabama. Elizabeth Self Bradley died May 12, 1863 in Alabama. She and Presley Bradley had five children: Mary E.; Manda; Harriet; Drury and Allen R. (not in this order) I have no other clues on the Self family. Hoping this will help.

#143793 I am looking for information about Elvira Self. She was born in 1803 and died April 30, 1844. She was married on May 26, 1835 or 37 to John H. Lane. They lived in or around Greene County, Tenn. She was my great-great-grandmother. I would appreciate any help and information about who her parents and siblings were.
#143794 William Self was a revolutionary soldier, born about 1754. besides his son, William Isaac, born about 1774, who wed Dicey Vaughn in 1795, he had 4 other sons & a daughter, Dicey. His son, Joseph, was born about 1788 & wed Rachel Bearden Feb 25 1810 in Clark Co GA. He seems to have abandoned Rachel about 1811, but they had one child, Lovick P., born Jul 6 1811, who wed Anna Callaham about 1830. Before he died in 1837, Lovick & Anna had 5 children; James Anderson, Isaiah G., Mary I., William Joseph, & Jacob C. Self. I'm interested in comparing information about any of the above with anyone who may be interested.
#143795 In my Beasley family, one Carey Beasley married Mary Self, 25 Dec 1809. Carey born ca. 1789 NC died 1818-1819. they had 3 children Nancy who married Zachariah Ham, Jr in Cumberland Co. 1829, John Mebane Beasley who married Mariah Holmes in 1837 in Fayetteville, NC and Sarah of whom I have found nothing. After the death of Carey, Mary married George Dudley who had been made guardian of the Beasley children. Does anyone know anything about this Mary Self? Would appreciate very much any data concerning this Self line.
#143801 I recently came across an obituary of my earliest Selph ancestor, Job Gillum Selph. He died on July 4, 1854. The obit said that he was born in Franklin County, North Carolina and emigrated to Nashville, Tennessee at an early age. He apparently befriended a man named Harry Hill and became a leading merchant in Nashville. I would appreciate any information that those of you in the Nashville area could dig up for me.
#143802 Virginia. Caroline County. Seeking information on the children of John Self and Susan Jane Poats Self Boulware: John and Susan were married 24 Dec. 1861 and had the following children: Coleman, b. Nov. 1862; Lewis C. Self, b. about 1863, Walter Franklin Self, b. April 1865, and Virginia, b. 1866.
John Self died before or during 1868, as Susan (Widow) married Mark Boulware (found in the household of John [Anderson Self II] & Mary Self in 1850 & 1860) on 31 Dec. 1868, and the 1870 census shows three of the four Self children in their household. We assume Coleman did not survive to 1870.
Mark Boulware 25 MW farmer,
Susan Boulware 26 FW housekeeper,
Lewis Self 7 MW
Walter F. Self 5 MW

The 1880 Census shows the addition of four half-sisters to these Self children:

In 1870 Susan's mother, Martha Potts (Poats; Poates) was in the household of Susan's brother Lewis Poats in Caroline County. (Susan and Lewis were born in King George County). They also had other brothers and sisters: Addison Potts, b. 1843; Angeline Potts b. 1844 or 1847; William Potts b. 1849, John H. Potts b. 1851 and Georgiana Potts b. 1856). Information on any of these siblings would also be of interest.
#143811 Seeking descendants of Sarah Ann E. Self and Joseph Martin Dickey of Barren County, KY. The only surviving children of this couple were Henry W. Dickey born 1853, married Fannie Preston - 1878, and brother John F. Dickey born 1855, married Susan B. Preston about 1881. If you can trace your roots to these brothers, Henry and John Dickey, please contact us.
#144991 I have two Self women in my family that I cannot find a single jot of information about. Here is all I know about these two women (they are not related to each other as far as I know). 1. My ggguncle married Daisy Self. Here is the information I have about him, his wife, and their children: Marriages from Microfilmed Newspapers of Old Greer County 1898-1906 Compiled by Jodean Martin. Shared, with permission of compiler, by Susan Bradford. Moody, P. H. Self, Daisy Sept 22, 1904. Paul is shown as widowed in 1920, so Daisy had passed away by then. I don't know if she died while the family was still in Oklahoma, or if she died after they moved to Arizona. 1920 Maricopa County Census - Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona Moody, Paul H Age: 40 Year: 1920 Birthplace: Oklahoma Roll: T 625_49 Race: White Page: 18B State: Arizona ED: 63 County: Maricopa Image: 0829 Township: Phoenix Paul H. She was the third wife of William H. Graham, whom she married about 1868, probably in Denton County, Texas. Here is the information I have about her, her husbands, and her children: Anne Self, born September 7, 1847 in Texas, was widowed (William H. Graham died) one month before their son Allen was born in Denton County, Texas. She later married a man named James Hester, and she died on November 3, 1912 in Bandera, Bandera County, Texas. 1880 United States Census (Texas)

# 141001 Descendants of Ward Clark Self. I would like to correspond with any descendants of my Uncle Ward Clark Self. Ward was the youngest of four children. He was born on 20 February 1923 to Samuel Clark Self and Florence Yates Self. His paternal grandparents were John Clark Self and America Berryhill Self. Ward was most likely born on the family dairy farm located a few miles south of Mounds, Oklahoma. (I was born there in 1934 and suspect he was also.) He lived with my grandparents until they passed away in the 1950's. Ward married Barbara June Waits on May 29, 1953 and lived with his wife on the dairy farm for a number of years. They had 2 boys and 4 girls whom I met in 1962 when they were very small or could even have been babies. Ward and his wife were divorced and she took the children and moved to Kansas I believe. The first born, a son named Monty, died in his 20's. Ward remarried and died in Ada, Oklahoma in the middle 1970's without additional children. That's all the information I have at this time. My 90 year old mother (Ward's sister) has a treasure of history concerning life on the Self farm if any of Uncle Ward's descendants are interested.
# 1441002 I am looking for information on my great grandmother Rosetta Self. She married John Shomate. They lived in Saline County, Illlinois. She was married on 2-8-1883. I know nothing about her or her family. Who were her parents? Where did they come from? I have heard that my grandmother had Indian blood. Did it come from the Self's? Thanks for any information you may have. Reply: I didn't find your Rosetta Self, but can offer the following from the 1880 Census of Illinois. In Saline County, District 111, El Dorado, page 140B, is the family of Thomas Self, born Indiana, the only Self family in Saline County in 1880. Thomas Self has in his family, three females of age to marry in 1883 - Jane Self, 16; Isabell Self, 14, and Ellen Self, 12. Did your Rosetta go by a different name? In the same area, on page 126A of the Census, we find a John Shomate, age 22, living with his mother Elizabeth Shomate.
# 1441003 I have read that Charnock Self was born in Loudoun County, Virginia. I know that he lived and died in Gallitin County, Kentucky because I have found and have copies of many land records transactions there. I also have copies that I made of his estate papers from Gallitin CO., KY. I feel that he had two wives named Elizabeth. I don't know the first wife's maiden name, but I have a feeling it was Davis because she named her first son James Davis Self (maybe her fathers'). I know all his children belonged to his first wife because I have seen evidence of his second wife Betsy Brent's father's estate that specified that only her children would share in his estate and she had none. Can anyone add any more to this and where the evidence can be found?
#1441011 Does anyone have any proof of Charnock Self's service in the Revolutionary War? I feel sure he served because of his age but have never found any evidence.
